Public housing provides decent and safe rental housing for
eligible low- to moderate-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public Housing is owned and operated by the Newark Housing Authority.
NHA accepts preliminary applications by telephone or in person. Applicants are welcome to apply when the waiting list is open. It is advertised in the News Journal, in the classified section under “Public Notice.”
NHA uses a waiting list to manage applicants. When the waiting list is open, NHA accepts applications. When your application is at the top of the waiting list, NHA will contact you to set up an appointment at our office for final eligibility determination. At that time, you will be asked to verify the preferences you claimed on your application form, sign various documents, provide NHA with documents verifying everyone’s identification, relationship to head of household and immigration status. A security clearance is conducted to verify that the adults in your household do not have a drug or violent criminal background.
Yes, your Voucher is portable — you can take it with you when you move away. Where and when you can move with your Voucher is determined by housing authority policy. Please contact NHA for specific information before making plans to move.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a form of federal rent subsidy which assists program participants with monthly rental payments to ensure that the families have a safe, decent and sanitary place to live. The Newark Housing Authority administers funds received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and distributes them in the form of Housing Choice Vouchers to eligible families and individuals.
A Voucher allows participating households (participants) to rent housing that meets their needs. The participants pays a portion of the rent directly to the landlord. HUD pays the landlord the difference between the participant’s portion of the rent and the total rental amount due.
