Newark Housing Authority Redevelopment Project One Step Closer to Approval

The Newark Housing Authority’s project to build new affordable housing units in downtown Newark is one step closer to fruition.

On Nov. 13, city council unanimously agreed to NHA’s request for the city to vacate Independence Circle. The road will no longer be a public right-of-way, and the land will be conveyed to NHA for use as part of its redevelopment project.

The vote was uncontroversial and largely procedural, but it clears the way for NHA to move ahead in the process to redevelop its Main Street and George Read Village properties into more modern housing.

“It puts us one more step closer to moving forward with the redevelopment of George Read Village,” NHA Executive Director Marene Jordan said. “It has been a long journey to get to where we are right now.”
